"The Snow Man" by Hans Christian Andersen | Winter Holiday Reading Activities
Assess reading comprehension, support vocabulary development, and facilitate analytical thinking with this set of activities covering Hans Christian Andersen's short story "The Snow Man." A plot-based quiz, a close reading analysis worksheet, a vocabulary application activity, a crossword puzzle, a word search game, the public domain narrative, and answer keys are provided. Materials are delivered in editable Word Document and printable PDF formats. (Alternatively, a Google Drive option is available.) By engaging with these activities and assessments, students will:
Define words and phrases as they are used in the text.
Evaluate characterization, such as how the Snow Man's misunderstandings, impatience, and limited vocabulary make him seem childlike.
Articulate how a given detail is an example of foreshadowing (e.g., the Snow Man's internal "crackling").
Infer the intended meaning of ambiguous phrases, developing greater understanding of theme.
Identify alliteration, sibilance, metaphor, and onomatopoeia in Andersen's vivid winter descriptions.
Analyze the symbolism associated with an object that is central to the Snow Man's identity.
Draw logical conclusions about surreal details—such as the forest of "white coral"—and how they contribute to Andersen's dreamlike style.
Plot synopsis:
A snow man with childlike curiosity befriends a dog who helps it learn life lessons. Harsher lessons are to be learned when the snow man learns what it feels like to love someone unreachable.
