"The Censors" by Luisa Valenzuela Quiz, Analysis Worksheet, and Vocabulary Activities
Expose readers to political and social satire, evaluate reading comprehension, and sharpen literary analysis skills with these activities and assessments covering Luisa Valenzuela's short story "The Censors." A plot-based quiz, close reading analysis worksheet, vocabulary application exercise, crossword puzzle, word search game, and answer keys are included. Materials are delivered in editable Word Document and printable PDF formats. (Alternatively, a Google Drive option is available.) With these materials, students will be able to:
Revisit the text to isolate and explain an example of foreshadowing
Apply knowledge of idioms to the text
Infer the protagonist's intentions based on his actions
Discern tone in the context of the complete story
Explore themes of power, conformity, and self-interest
Identify the targets of satire in the story
Defend claims with textual evidence and logic
Conduct research to explore the historical context of Argentina's political repression in the 1970s ("Dirty War"), making connections to the story
"The Censors" focuses on a man who aims to infiltrate a censorship office by gaining employment there, but as time goes on, his concerns about the Censorship Division fade away while his professional devotion reaches dangerous levels. The brevity of the narrative helps students remain invested in plot developments and helps educators fill awkward gaps in their teaching schedules. Given the story's classification as satirical fiction with elements of dark humor, it pairs well with texts such as Carol Farley's "Lose Now, Pay Later" and Eando Binder's "In a Graveyard."
