"In a Graveyard" Gothic Literature Activities | Dark Humor | Halloween Horror
Embrace the Halloween spirit and help high school readers explore Gothic fiction and dark humor with this bundle of activities and assessments covering vampire-themed short story "In a Graveyard" by Eando Binder. A plot-based quiz, literary analysis worksheet, vocabulary application exercise, crossword puzzle, word search game, and answer keys are included. Materials are delivered in editable Word Document and printable PDF formats. (Alternatively, a Google Drive option is available.) Students will practice and demonstrate the following essential ELA skills:
Close reading and textual analysis of Gothic imagery and diction.
Identifying and interpreting literary devices including simile, onomatopoeia, personification, and foreshadowing.
Evaluating tone and mood through the author's use of setting and sound imagery (e.g., "plaintive note of the whippoorwill," "hoot of an owl")
Exploring dark comedy and its function in Gothic storytelling
Making inferences about character motivation and hidden identity using contextual evidence
"In a Graveyard" centers on a writer who visits a cemetery for literary inspiration and encounters a seemingly friendly stranger whose life is strangely similar to that of a legendarily dark literary figure – the vampire. The story's moody atmosphere and slow-building dread make "In a Graveyard" a compelling addition to a short story unit, especially around Halloween season, and its concise length and approachable diction make it appropriate for more reluctant readers and classroom read-alouds.
